Hot Door CADtools FAQ Triangle

Before looking through the FAQ...

One of the most important resources is the Hot Door CADtools user guide! This is built into CADtools 10 through the CADhelp panel. In previous versions, the user guide was available in the CADtools download as a PDF file. Click here to download a copy of the CADtools 9 user guide.

It is important to update CADtools regularly to remain compatible with frequent updates of Adobe Illustrator. Minor bug fixes and features will be included in these CADtools updates. To see what version you are running on Mac, open Illustrator and choose the Illustrator menu > About Hot Door CADtools. On Windows, choose Help > About Hot Door CADtools.

To update, click on Window > CADtools > Check for Updates. CADtools will check your version against the latest version, and download the update if necessary.

I just updated Illustrator to version 19.2.1 (CC 2015.2.1) and now CADtools won't load! What's wrong?

Adobe introduced a bug in 19.2.1 that makes plug-ins think they're in the wrong installation location. We worked around their bug in our CADtools 9.1.2 free update. The current version is now 9.2.

Why does CADtools on Windows look so funny? Text doesn't fit in the windows.

On Windows, screen resolution can be set separately from text size. Illustrator repsects some of these settings but not others. Consequently, CADtools can only respond to some settings and not others. The default on Windows is to display text at 100% regardless of the screen resolution. This is the best setting and will always result in proper drawing of the UI. If this value was adjusted to make text larger, then the CADtools UI may not draw correctly. To fix this issue, the text size should be reset to 100%.

In your Control Panel, choose "Adjust screen resolution."

Then, choose "Make text and other items larger or smaller."

Next, select "Smaller - 100% (default)." If you must have larger text, then 125% or 150% will work, but some items will be cut off in the UI. Anything larger WILL NOT WORK correctly.

Why does CADtools keep insisting that I do not have an internet connection and why have I been switched to Feature Limited Demo Mode?

This is due to a networking bug. It has been fixed in latest versions of CADtools 8 and CADtools 9. Please click the following for the latest versions:

IMPORTANT: if you install the latest version and there is still an issue, it probably means that you didn't actually install the latest version in the proper location. Please read the following question regarding 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Illustrator.

Why does Illustrator CS6/CC crash or give an error when launching in Windows?

There are two different versions of CADtools 9 and 10 for CS6 / CC / CC 2014 / CC 2015 / CC 2017. One is 32-bit and one is 64-bit. The correct version of CADtools to install depends on the version of Illustrator installed rather than the type of Windows operating system installed. To determine the proper version to install, please refer to the diagram below.

Why is Illustrator crashing?

There are no known crash bugs with CADtools 9 or 10. When Illustrator is shut down without saving, the Illustrator preferences file may become corrupt, and this appears to be the culprit in some crash issues. If Illustrator is crashing when using CADtools, please follow these instructions to delete the Illustrator settings folder, which includes preferences.

On Mac with Illustrator CC 2017 delete:

In CADtools 7 and earlier versions, the CADtools preferences and Illustrator preferences were placed in the same folder. In CADtools 8 and above, they are no longer together. Don’t worry... when you launch Illustrator, new settings and preferences folders will be automatically created.

I'm on Windows and I have run Illustrator as an administrator by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator", but now Illustrator is crashing. How do I fix this?

This appears to be a bug with Illustrator and permissions on some Adobe folders. This can be resolved by relaxing the permissions on the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

Right-click on the folder(s), choose Properties, and open the Security tab. Click the Edit button, and give Full Control permissions to the Users domain and/or the specific user affected by the crash.

Once you have given full permissions to standard users on those folders, relaunch Illustrator and it should launch normally. Once Illustrator has finished opening, quit it. Often times the permissions on these folders can be reverted, and Illustrator will continue to launch without issue.

What is the CADtools 10 compatibility and upgrade path?

CADtools 10 will work with Illustrator CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, and CC 2017.

If you own CADtools 7, 8, or 9 you can upgrade to CADtools 10 at the upgrade price. All CADtools 9 purchases made after January 1, 2016 qualify for a free upgrade to CADtools 10. If you own a version of CADtools previous to version 7, you are not eligible for upgrade pricing.

If you need to purchase CADtools for a version of Adobe Illustrator previous to CS6, please email us for instructions.

How do CADtools 9 and 10 work with Adobe Creative Cloud?

CADtools 9 and 10 are fully compatible with Adobe Creative Cloud. The Adobe Creative Cloud offers a time-based membership for Adobe's Creative Suite software including Adobe Illustrator (CC). Installation and operation of Adobe Illustrator is the same for traditional and Adobe Creative Cloud versions. Similarly, CADtools 9 and 10 run directly on the computer and will work as long as Adobe Illustrator is operating.

Adobe Creative Cloud includes regular updates, and CADtools 9 and 10 follow this pattern with automatic check for free updates, immediate compatibility, and feature enhancements. Major CADtools upgrades will not require synchronization with the Adobe Illustrator release schedule.

How does the new Hot Door CORE™ affect my work?

The new Hot Door CORE™ (COde REsource) architecture dramatically increases software performance and allows for rapid integration of new features and enhancements. Hot Door CORE™ ensures that new, compatible versions of CADtools will be accessible to Creative Cloud users who require prompt upgrades to the next version of Adobe Illustrator. Older versions of CADtools are available at the links below.

Why does my CADtools scale keep changing to 1:1?

If you select any artwork on the Dimension Layer, your scale will change to 1:1 which is the scale of the Dimension Layer. Avoid creating your artwork in the Dimension Layer if you need to use another scale. Another problem may relate to isolation mode; since Illustrator CS3, double-clicking grouped objects will enter the isolation mode by default. This behavior conflicts with the CADtools scale information in CS3 with CADtools 5. To disable the behavior, uncheck "Double click to Isolate" in the Illustrator Preferences. The preference for entering isolation mode is located in the Illustrator General Preferences. The isolation mode conflict is fixed in CADtools 6 and above, with Illustrator CS4 and above.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If you are having any problems, including your serial number not saving...

First, be sure that CADtools is installed in the correct location, with no duplicates in other folders. The CADtools.aip file must be in the Tools folder, which resides in the Illustrator Plug-ins folder. If you upgrade Adobe Illustrator, you must reinstall CADtools. CADtools 10 can only be installed for CS6, CC, 2CC 2014, CC 2015, or CC 2017.

If the plug-in is installed correctly, the first step in troubleshooting most any problem is deleting your Illustrator Preferences file. The Preferences file is created or updated every time you use Illustrator, and it can often become a hidden source of problems. To delete this file and force Illustrator to create a new one, follow these steps:

  • Make sure you have the serial numbers for any third-party plugins for Illustrator, as the numbers might need to be re-entered after deleting your Preferences (CADtools excluded).
  • Quit Illustrator
  • If you are running Mac OS X, find the Illustrator preferences file. Choose "Go to Folder..." under the Go menu when you are in the Finder on your computer. Type in "~/Library/Preferences/" and then you will see the Preferences folder and the Adobe Illustrator settings. Select the Adobe Illustrator Settings folder. Select the "Adobe Illustrator Prefs" file and delete it. If you are running Illustrator CC or later, there will also be a folder named Adobe in the Preferences folder. In the Adobe folder is an Adobe Illustrator folder. Delete this folder as well.
  • If you are running a Windows machine, you will need to perform a search for a file called "AIPrefs", and then delete it. You may need to check Advanced Options under the Search Companion, then check "Search hidden files and folders" to allow searching of the AIPrefs file. If this does not work, and you are using Windows XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name, or Owner)\Application Data\Adobe. For Windows Vista or Windows 7, go to C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\. Delete the Adobe Illustrator XX settings folder. If you are running Illustrator CC or later, there will also be a folder named Adobe Illustrator (without the version numbers) in the Adobe folder. Delete this folder as well.
  • Restart Illustrator. Once Illustrator has completed loading, quit it without opening any new documents. Documents can often be the culprits for corrupting the preferences, especially since Illustrator does not write out new preferences until quitting.

I'm using Mac OS X Lion (or above) and I can't find my Library or Preferences folder

The folders are still there, but Apple has made them invisible. To access the Library folder, choose "Go to Folder..." under the Go menu in the Finder. Type in "~/Library". Now you can access the Preferences or any other folder contained in the Library.

On how many machines can I install CADtools?

From the CADtools license agreement: Hot Door grants to Customer the right to install the Software on a storage device of up to the permitted number of computers that matches the number of Software licenses that Customer purchased. Each Software license purchased permits use on only one computer, excluding a secondary portable or home computer, that is not used at the same time as the primary computer. When using both Mac OS and Windows on the same or different machines, each operating system is considered, and is counted as, a separate computer. If the Software is intended for network use, Hot Door grants the Customer the right to install and use the Software on a single file server for use on a single local area network for either (a) permanent installation on a storage device of up to the permitted number of computers OR (b) use of the Software over this network if the number of computers on which the Software is used does not exceed the permitted number of computers. Click here to download the entire agreement.

Why does my background grey out when I try to edit labels or other CADtools objects?

Adobe Illustrator CS3 and above have a feature called isolation mode, and by double-clicking grouped objects you will enter this isolation mode by default. The preference for entering isolation mode is located in the Illustrator General Preferences section. To disable the behavior, uncheck "Double click to Isolate" in Illustrator's preferences.

Will CADtools 10 work with my version of Illustrator and my operating system?

  • Mac OS X running Illustrator CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, or CC 2017 - Yes, CADtools 10 is a native OS X plugin.
  • Mac OS 9 running Illustrator 10 or below - No, Mac OS 9 is no longer supported.
  • Windows running Illustrator CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC 2015, or CC 2017 - Yes.

How can I use CADtools with Illustrator CS5 or below?

CADtools 10 is not compatible with Illustrator CS5 or earlier. However, you may purchase CADtools 10 and call us at 1-888-236-9540 and arrange to receive an older version that will be compatible with prior versions of Illustrator.

What if I am experiencing problems with both MultiPage and CADtools installed?

MultiPage and CADtools both access the Layers palette and can conflict with each other unless you do a few things. First, uncheck Create and Use Dimension Layer and Create Live Dimensions in the CADdocument panel. Also, avoid using CADrulers and CADgrids when MultiPage is turned on. These features are not essential to most CADtools users, but if you have further concerns please send us an email.

How do I uninstall CADtools?

If you need to uninstall the CADtools full version or demo, simply remove the CADtools file from the Illustrator/Plug-ins/Tools or Illustrator/Plug-ins/ folder.

Does CADtools support DXF, DWG, or other CAD-related formats?

CADtools does not add any new file import/export features to Adobe Illustrator, but DXF import/export is fully supported in Illustrator since CS3. Once a file is imported as vector artwork inside Adobe Illustrator, CADtools can be used to dimension or edit the artwork. In some cases, an imported file may contain artwork comprised of small line segments. Dimensioning tools by line, as well as radius, diameter, arc length, and Bezier curvature dimensioning tools will not work for such segmented artwork. To connect these DXF/DWG line segments, use the Concatenate filter available at Graffix Software. For more information on opening or placing files within Illustrator, please refer to the Adobe Illustrator User Guide, technical notes, and the Adobe web site.

Hot Door MultiPage FAQ Triangle

What is new in Hot Door MultiPage 4?

MultiPage 4.1 is required for compatibility with Illustrator CS3/CS4 and includes new JPEG and EPS export for multiple pages. MultiPage 4 also ships with MultiPage 1, 2, and 3 for compatibility with Illustrator 9, 10, CS, CS2. Installers and serial numbers for each version are shipped with MultiPage 4.1. The installation process will allow you to select the host version of Illustrator.

Do I qualify for a free upgrade to MultiPage 4.1 for CS4?

All customers who purchased MultiPage 4 are eligible for a free upgrade to MultiPage 4.1 for CS4. If you did not receive instructions on downloading your free upgrade, please contact us at knock@hotdoor.com

What versions of Illustrator work with MultiPage 1, 2, 3 or 4?

MultiPage 1, 2, 3, and 4 can be installed with the purchase of MultiPage 4. MultiPage 1 works with Illustrator 9 and 10. MultiPage 2 works with Illustrator CS only. MultiPage 3 works with Illustrator CS2 only. MultiPage 4.1 works with Illustrator CS3 or CS4.

I'm using MultiPage 4 with Illustrator CS3 - if I close the MultiPage palette, why won't it reappear?

The source of this problem is closing the MultiPage palette with the close button (the little "x") next to the word "MultiPage" instead of the close button in the upper-right corner of the palette. Adobe eliminated this problem in CS4 by removing the little "x" next to palette names.

The solution involves deleting the Adobe Illustrator Settings folder. Before doing this, if you are concerned with the layout of your workspace(s), we suggest taking screenshots so you may restore it later. Also, write down any plug-in serial numbers in case you do not have them saved/stored elsewhere. To delete the Illustrator Settings folder:

  • If Illustrator is open, save any open documents and quit before continuing.
  • If you are using a Mac, open your hard drive and go to Users/(your user name)/Library/Preferences. If you are using Windows XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name, or Owner)\Application Data\Adobe. For Windows Vista, go to C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe. In this location you should find a Settings folder named "Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings."
  • Delete the entire Settings folder.
  • Reopen Illustrator and input any plug-in serial numbers when prompted.
  • Immediately quit Illustrator (to automatically save the serial numbers in the Preferences file.)

Are there any limitations when exporting PDF files with MultiPage?

Avoid locking layers or sublayers with the Illustrator Layers palette as this will conflict with the operation of the MultiPage palette and PDF export. Also, on Windows, be sure to include the file extension when naming the PDF file.

What happens when I try to open and print my multiple page Illustrator document without the MultiPage plug-in installed?

Files saved with multiple pages can be opened with or without the MultiPage plug-in installed. In either case, each page will appear as a layer, and any master pages will be locked, underlying layers. To print each "page", you will need to hide and show layers and print using the Illustrator print functions. If page numbers were expanded, they will appear as artwork on each layer.

How do I export smaller PDF files with MultiPage?

MultiPage 2, 3, and 4 have improved the file size of multiple page PDF files and use Illustrator PDF presets to save files with custom settings. MultiPage 2 installs a special preset designed to reduce PDF file sizes during export. When exporting MultiPage PDF files, choose the Preset "Small MultiPage PDF" to ensure smaller PDF file sizes. The MultiPage 3 and 4 export provides access to Illustrator PDF Presets which include "Smallest File Size." You can reduce file sizes even further by adjusting Downsampling values under Compression settings.

For Illustrator CS: You can also create your own preset by choosing Edit > PDF Presets. When you create a new preset, you can reduce file sizes: Uncheck Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities, uncheck Embed Page Thumbnails, uncheck Optimize for Fast Web View, and uncheck View PDF after Saving. You may want to adjust more graphics compression options under the Compression category.

For Illustrator CS2, CS3, and CS4: Select "Smallest File Size" Preset for smaller file sizes when exporting. Reduce sizes further by editing downsampling values under Compression settings.

Why would my exported files have trouble reading with Acrobat Reader?

To prevent errors in writing multiple page PDF files, do NOT use the Illustrator Default PDF Preset. Use or edit the other settings such as High Quality Print or Smallest File Size for best results. Also, on Windows, be sure to include the file extension when naming the PDF file.

How do I avoid the recurring Save dialog when I try to export a multiple page PDF?

To prevent the recurring Save dialog, expand any Live effects on your document with the Illustrator Object menu. An even easier solution is choosing Icon View rather than Thumbnail View in the MultiPage Preferences (lower left corner of the MultiPage palette).

Why do I have to re-enter my serial number every time that I launch Illustrator?

The first step in troubleshooting most any problem is deleting your Illustrator preferences file. The preferences file is created or updated every time you use Illustrator, and it can often become a hidden source of problems. To delete this file and force Illustrator to create a new one, follow these steps:

  • Make sure you have the serial numbers for any third party plugins for Illustrator - the numbers will need to be re-entered after deleting prefs
  • Quit Illustrator
  • Find the Illustrator preferences file using the following steps:
    • 1) If you are running Mac OS Classic, you should delete your Adobe Illustrator preferences in the "Preferences" folder, inside the "System Folder".
    • 2) If you are running Mac OS X, you should delete your preferences from your particular user account. You can find the Illustrator preferences in this folder, using the "Go to Folder..." command in the Finder: ~/Library/Preferences/
    • 3) If you are running a Windows machine, you will need to search for a file called "AI Prefs", and then delete it.
  • Delete the Illustrator Preferences file for the version of Illustrator that is causing problems.
  • Launch Illustrator, entering any necessary plugin serial numbers.
  • Immediately quit Illustrator without opening any documents. Documents can often times be the culprits for corrupting the preferences, especially since Illustrator does not write out new preferences until quit.
  • Restart Illustrator.

Why does my page not become active when I select it from the Layers palette?

A highlighted (selected) layer in Illustrator does not mean a page or layer is visible or active for editing. Use the MultiPage palette to navigate between pages for viewing and editing.

Why do I sometimes get extremely large file sizes when exporting PDF files with MultiPage 1?

When using MultiPage 1, your multiple page PDF files are large due to the use of placed images in Adobe Illustrator. (You cannot prevent this problem by unchecking "Link" when placing your images.) Also, if you have checked Preserve Illustrator editing capabilities in the Multiple Page PDF export dialog box, you will increase the size of your PDF file. The first step in reducing file size is to choose "Smallest File Size" in the Adobe Save PDF window. You can further reduce the file size by adjusting the Compression - Downsampling settings in the Save PDF window. For web or on-screen viewing, you may want to downsample images to 72 ppi for maximum compression. For complete details on compression settings, please refer to the Illustrator Help section titled "Compression and downsampling options for PDF."

Why do I sometimes get a blank or single page PDF file when I export a multiple page PDF file?

There are two possible causes for this problem:

1) The most common cause is that the source file is located on a server. This is a known issue with Illustrator, and unfortunately we cannot work around it. The solution is to work on the file locally and then export it again.

2) The second possible cause is corrupted data, i.e. an image, in the source file. For example, if a multiple page PDF is exported and only the first three pages show, there is likely a corrupted image on the fourth page. The solution is to open the image in question in Photoshop or a similar program, resave it, and replace the image in the Illustrator source file.

What are the system requirements for MultiPage 4?

MultiPage is distributed electronically or on CD, and only requires Illustrator CS3 or CS4. MultiPage does not require additional RAM, but Illustrator may require more memory to export complex PDF files. MultiPage is approximately 1 MB in size. The user guide is only available as a PDF file.

Is there a demo version of MultiPage?

Download a free demo of MultiPage from this web site! It will function for an unlimited time period but limits your document to 5 pages and disables master pages, print and export of multiple pages.

How much disk space do I need to run MultiPage?

Do the tools work the same on Macintosh and Windows platforms?

Yes!

Hot Door CADpatterns FAQ Triangle

Can I edit or colorize CADpatterns?

Yes, all CADpatterns are comprised of vector line art that is colored and filled like other Illustrator objects.

How do I make the CADpattern rotate or scale inside the object?

Enable Transform Pattern Tiles by checking Transform Pattern Tiles in the Illustrator Preferences > General panel. Then the patterns applied to objects will automatically transform with the objects. You can also use the Rotate, Reflect, Scale, or Shear tools to adjust the pattern without affecting the object. Select the object and choose the Rotate, Reflect, Scale, or Shear tool. Then hold down the tilde key (~), and drag. The pattern will adjust inside the object.

How do I colorize a CADpattern swatch?

To add color to a swatch from the CADpatterns palette:

  • 1. Drag the swatch pattern from the CADpatterns palette on to the artboard.
  • 2. Ungroup the artwork - you may need to ungroup more than once to completely ungroup it.
  • 3. Color the pattern lines and objects as desired. You can scale the pattern as long as the bounding box is scaled with the objects. Do not move objects, as they may not tile properly if repositioned.
  • 4. Select the bounding box. If you want to color the background of the pattern tile, fill this box with a color. If you do not need a colored background, skip to step 6.
  • 5. If you have colored the bounding box, you need another bounding box behind the artwork with no fill or stroke. Copy the colored bounding box, choose Edit > Paste In Back, then fill and stroke with none.
  • 6. Select the entire pattern tile with the back-most bounding box and move it to the Illustrator Swatches palette.
  • 7. To edit the swatch pattern name, double click on it.

Illustrator CS or CS2 - How do I create a new library with edited swatch patterns?

Once you have edited patterns and moved them into the Illustrator Swatches palette, you can save them as a library for future access in other files.

  • 1. View only the pattern swatches by clicking on the small pattern icon at the bottom of the Illustrator Swatches palette.
  • 2. Use the Swatches palette pop-up menu to select Save Swatch Library...
  • 3. Name the library and save it. You may store and access the Hot Door CADpatterns file from anywhere on your hard drive, but Illustrator pattern files are typically stored inside the Adobe Illustrator/Presets/Swatches/Patterns folder.

A saved library of patterns is not editable, so you may want to save and open a working Illustrator file containing the pattern artwork in the Swatches palette if you plan on updating the patterns more frequently.

Illustrator 10 - How do I create a new library with edited swatch patterns?

Illustrator 10 does not allow saving of Swatch Libraries, but you can use Open Swatch Library to open any file and access its swatches - including patterns. Save your patterns in the Swatch palette of a blank Illustrator file, then open that file using Open Swatch Library. Once the patterns are open in their own palette, drag them to the Swatches palette to edit them as needed.

What are the system requirements for CADpatterns?

CADpatterns is distributed electronically or on CD, and only requires Illustrator 10, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS6. CADpatterns is approximately 5 MB in size. The user guide is only available as a PDF file.

Does Hot Door CADpatterns work with Adobe Illustrator 7, 8, or 9?

No. CADpatterns will only work in Adobe Illustrator 10, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS6.

Is there a demo version of CADpatterns?

No, but you can view the patterns on the CADpatterns overview page.

Code Zebra Tech Symbols FAQ Triangle

Does Code Zebra's Tech Symbols work with Illustrator CC?

Yes. If you already own Symbols and want to use them inside CC, you need to move the Symbols from the old Illustrator/Presets/Symbols folder to the Symbols folder in Illustrator CC.

How do I fill my symbols with color in Illustrator?

Code Zebra symbols are provided as line art which can be adjusted in size, stroke width, and color. To color the symbols, you can use the new Live Paint Bucket tool in Illustrator CS2 to easily fill sections of the symbols. Be sure to Expand the symbol before using the Live Paint Bucket tool. Then select the entire symbol prior to applying paint with the Live Paint bucket tool.

If you are using an older version of Illustrator and need to color the symbols, you will have to connect the segments of the symbol artwork. Connecting discontiguous lines is often a challenge with DXF files as well. Please try using the Concatenate plugin from Graffix that connects paths. You will need to register (purchase) the plugin in order to make it work with a larger number of paths.

How do I create my own symbol libraries?

With a few steps, you can easily create your own symbol libraries within Illustrator using your own artwork or symbols from Code Zebra. First open the default Symbols palette from the Adobe Illustrator > Windows menu. If you do not want the default Symbols in your new library, delete them by selecting them and clicking the trash can in the Symbols palette. (These default symbols will always appear in the Symbols palette when you create a new document). Note: You must use the default Symbols palette in Illustrator to create your new library, as Code Zebra Symbol libraries cannot be edited.

If you want to create a Symbol library with your own artwork, first create the artwork within Adobe Illustrator, select it, and drag it to your empty Symbols palette. The artwork can include any vector or raster image (linked images must be rasterized before moving to the Symbols palette). Many designers manipulate and colorize Code Zebra symbols to create their own architectural or labeling symbols that express a unique professional style.

If you want to include symbols from an Adobe library or Code Zebra library, simply open the library from the Symbols palette > Open Symbol Library menu, then drag the desired symbol into your palette.

Most importantly, you need to save your new Symbol library for future access. Choose Save Symbol Library from the Symbols palette menu. You can save the library anywhere. However, if you save the library file in the default location (Illustrator/Presets/Symbols), the library name will conveniently appear in the Symbol Libraries submenu and the Open Symbol Library submenu when you restart Illustrator.

If you have any specific questions please send Code Zebra an email at: support@codezebra.com
